Stats Corner: Saturdays Competitors

15 Apr 2017

Before Semifinal Saturday kicks off at River Oaks, let's get to know more about our final four U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship competitors.

- This is the fifth time three Americans have reached the US Clay semifinals in the Open Era, and the first time since 2002 when Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras were among the final four.

- This is the first time three Americans have reached the semifinals of an ATP World Tour event since Newport in 2012 (Ryan Harrison, John Isner and Rajeev Ram).

- Jack Sock outlasted Feliciano Lopez 7-6(6) 1-6 6-4 to reach his third straight semifinal at River Oaks.

- Sock, a two-time title winner this season, is the first player to reach 20 wins on the ATP World Tour in 2017.

- Sock is the only past champion remaining in the field. The other semifinalists had never reached a quarterfinal at River Oaks before this year.

- Sock is the top seed at an ATP World Tour event for the first time in his career.

- Steve Johnson downed 2014 champion Fernando Verdasco 6-2 6-4.

- Johnson is through to his second semifinal of 2017, having previously reached the final four at Auckland where he lost to Sock.

- Sock and Johnson will play against in each other in Houston one week after they teamed up to win the doubles rubber for the United States in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Brisbane, Australia.

- Ernesto Escobedo reached his first career semifinal with a 7-6(6) 6-7(6) 7-6(5) win over John Isner.

- The quarterfinal was the fifth match in tournament history to go to three tie-breaks and the third featuring Isner, who has lost all three. The last such match came when Ivo Karlovic downed Isner in the 2011 quarterfinals.

- Escobedo, 20, is the youngest semifinalist here since 20-year-old Andy Roddick in 2003.

- Escobedo is playing his ninth career ATP World Tour event.

- Isner's 35 aces Friday set a tournament record, surpassing the mark of 28 set by Karlovic in the 2013 second round against Rhyne Williams.

- In his two matches, Isner hit 55 aces, which is the fifth most in tournament history, behind his record of 64, which he set in his title run in 2013.

- Thomaz Bellucci outlasted Sam Querrey 6-4 3-6 7-5 to reach the semifinals in his River Oaks debut.

- The last player to make the final in his Houston debut was Nicolas Almagro in 2013. The last player to win the title in his tournament debut was Marcel Granollers in 2008.

- All three of Bellucci's wins this week have come in three sets, making him the first semifinalist to have won three straight three-setters since Sebastien Grosjean in 2005. The only player to reach the US Clay final having played four consecutive three-set matches was David Wheaton in 1990.

- Looking ahead to Saturday's semifinals, Escobedo and Bellucci will be playing for the first time. Sock has a 4-1 edge in meetings against Johnson, including a win in their only clay match, which came at the 2014 French Open.
