10 Apr 2023

Max Purcell has repeated as doubles champion at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, claiming the 2023 title with Jordan Thompson with a 4-6 6-4 10-5 win over No. 3 seed Julian Cash and Henry Patten.

Coming out hot, Cash and Henry took the first two games in the first set on the way to opening up a 5-1 lead. Purcell and Thompson quickly came back to win the next three games, making it 5-4. Cash and Henry broke the Australians to claim the opening set 6-4.

In the second set, Cash and Patten lost a serve in the seventh game. It was the only break of the set as Purcell and Thompson forced the decider.

After a 2-all start to the match tie-break, Purcell and Thompson won eight of the final 11 points of the match to claim the title.

It was the fifth time in the last 6 years that the doubles final went into match tie break.

Purcell won the 2022 title with countryman Matt Ebden. The duo would later win the doubles title at Wimbledon. He is the first repeat doubles champion at River Oaks since Bob & Mike Bryan won three straight titles 2009-11.

Cash & Patten were appearing in an ATP final for the first time.
