The doubles tournament at the 2017 Fayez Sarofim and Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship could feature a rematch of the 2016 French Open final.
Reigning French Open champions Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez (no relation) have committed to play at River Oaks in April, along with the Roland Garros runners-up, twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan. Both teams have qualified for next week’s ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Feliciano will also play singles during the April 8-16 ATP World Tour tournament. A two-time singles semifinalist, this will be his fifth appearance at River Oaks.
“Our fans always take great interest in doubles during the tournament, so it’s with great pride that we announce the commitment of two of the ATP’s top doubles teams,” said Tournament Director Bronwyn Greer. “We wish Feliciano, Marc, Bob and Mike the best of luck at the ATP World Tour Finals, and look forward welcoming them to River Oaks in April.”
The Lopez duo claimed a pair of titles in 2016, winning in Doha as well as at the year’s only clay court Major, the French Open. The Spanish team also reached the final in Dubai this season, and enter the ATP’s year-end championship as the No. 4 seed.
Marc won an additional title in 2016, teaming with Rafael Nadal to win the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He owns 13 career titles, and has reached 15 other finals.
In singles, Feliciano picked up his fifth career title this summer, winning on clay in Gstaad. Also the finalist at Los Cabos, he has reached at least one final in six of the past seven years.
The Bryans are the most successful doubles team in the history of the game. The twin brothers will return to River Oaks to defend their title. Their 2016 win was their record sixth US Clay title, and they own a 36-8 record at the tournament.
The Houston win was one of three titles the Bryans collected in 2016, all of which came on clay. Together the Bryans have won 112 titles, including 16 at Grand Slam tournaments.
Last month, the Bryans won their 1,000th match as a team. They have finished as the ATP’s No. 1 ranked team 10 times in their career. At the ATP World Tour Finals, they will be the No. 3 seed.
