The eight projected seeds for the 2012 US Men’s Clay Court Championship are all currently ranked in the Top 40 on the ATP World Tour after a wild card was awarded to No. 28 Kevin Anderson.
Anderson, who won the title earlier this month in Delray Beach, received the final wild card, all three of which were given to players ranked in the Top 30, for the tournament that will be held April 9-15 at River Oaks Country Club.
With the addition of Anderson, the top eight players entered in the tournament are currently ranked in the Top 40. The final seeding list will be determined using the ATP rankings of Monday, April 2. However, if they were determined today, these would be the seeds for the event:
No. 1 Mardy Fish (USA) ATP Ranking - 8
No. 2 John Isner (USA) - 10
No. 3 (WC) Feliciano Lopez (ESP) - 15
No. 4 (WC) Juan Monaco (ARG) - 21
No. 5 Marcel Granollers (ESP) - 24
No. 6 (WC) Kevin Anderson (RSA) - 28
No. 7 Carlos Berlocq (ARG) - 37
No. 8 Alex Bogomolov, Jr. (RUS) - 39
“We feel this is one of the strongest fields that has been assembled for the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in recent years, and certainly since the event moved to River Oaks,” said tournament director Van Barry. “To have this line up of seeded players sets the stage for what should be a great tournament week at River Oaks.”
Both Anderson and Monaco are among the ATP players to have won a title already in 2012, with Monaco claiming the Vina del Mar title to go with Anderson’s triumph in Delray Beach.
There are other players in the field who are not only familiar with winning, but with hoisting the trophy at this very event, as four former champions are in the field: Fish (2006), Karlovic (2007), Granollers (2008) and defending champion Ryan Sweeting. Three former finalists are also in the field, and they are all Americans: Sam Querrey (2010), Wayne Odesnik (2009) and James Blake (2008).
The field of 24 players is now set for the 2012 tournament (SEE LIST HERE), with four other players set to join the field through the qualifying tournament that begins April 7.
The doubles field has also been released, and is headlined by four-time winners of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship Bob and Mike Bryan.
